YOUR LIFE EVENTS

When you enroll as a new hire, or during the annual open enrollment period, many of your benefit selections remain in effect for the entire calendar plan year. However, you may make a change to your benefits if you or your family experience a change that qualifies as a “Life Event.” In this section, we’ve outlined common life events, including the things you need to consider and actions you need to take to make sure any benefit changes go smoothly.

QUALIFYING LIFE EVENTS

You can enroll (or make a change to your benefits) during the year if you’ve experienced a qualifying life event, such as:

  • Change in marital status.
  • Change in number of dependents (i.e., birth, death or adoption).
  • Change in employment status for you, your spouse or dependent impacting coverage.
  • Change in dependent eligibility (i.e., attaining age 26).
  • Medicare or Medicaid entitlement for you, your spouse or dependent causing gain or loss of coverage.*
  • Gain or loss of other coverage through your spouse or for your dependent.
  • Receipt of a Qualified Medical Child Support Order (QMCSO).
  • Job status changes, such as from part-time, seasonal or temporary status to full-time status.

You will need to make changes within 30 days of the event and you will need to provide supporting documentation, such as a marriage certificate, birth certificate or document showing the date of lost or newly effective coverage. Timely changes are effective on the life event date. Changes can be made by visiting Workday and selecting Change Benefit Elections.

Medical, Dental, Vision and flexible spending accounts (FSA) are subject to life event only changes. Health savings account (HSA) and 401(k) changes and the cancellation of certain voluntary supplemental benefits are not subject to life events.
